The Challenge: Managing branded PPE securely whilst reducing environmental impact

Alun Griffiths, a regional civil engineering contractor that helps connect communities through road, rail, water, and utilities, generates significant volumes of end-of-life PPE and workwear across its operations.

Branded and identifiable workwear for Griffiths cannot simply be discarded, as any item could be misused and enter unauthorised areas. Additionally, Griffiths is committed to reducing waste, diverting re-usable resources away from landfill and cutting Scope 3 emissions. The challenge was to find a solution that combined secure destruction with a measurable circular outcome.

The Solution: SecureBrand®for circular PPE and workwear management

Since 2022, Alun Griffiths has partnered with Avena to implement the SecureBrand® solution for end-of-life PPE and workwear.

Items are securely collected and transported to an Avena accredited facility, where all branded workwear undergo complete and irreversible destruction. Materials are repurposed and remanufactured into further-life products, such as insulation or reinforced concrete.

This solution provides:

  • A fully audited chain of custody.
  • Elimination of brand misuse risks.
  • 100% diversion from landfill.
  • A circular outcome aligned with sustainability goals.

Client Testimonial

Working with Avena has enabled us to transform end-of-life PPE into a positive sustainability outcome. Their circular approach to textile repurposing aligns closely with the Environmental Responsibility theme of our Sustainability and Social Value Strategy, and their transparent reporting shows that almost 2 tonnes of carbon emissions have been avoided.

Equally important, Avena’s secure disposal process gives both us and our clients confidence that our branded PPE is managed responsibly and that the Griffiths brand is protected.”
